Nokia is back with a bang and it's latest offering Nokia 6 has already been sold-out in the Chinese market. HMD Global Oy, the Finnish manufacturer with exclusive rights to market phones under the Nokia brand, is planning to announce four new handsets at Mobile World Congress later this month. The company is also planning to resurrect the iconic 3310 phone at the MWC 2017.

Nokia was perhaps the first company to transform ordinary cell phones into fashion accessories and status symbol. With an impressive history of innovation-it was a pioneer in wireless infrastructure, phone camera technology and more.

Nokia 3310

We all remember the good old Nokia 3310 phone which was nearly indestructible, had long battery life and the epic Snake game. Nokia 3310 handset was once the most popular phone in the world before smartphones were launched. It sold extremely well, being one of the most successful phones with 126 million units sold worldwide. The 3310 was hugely popular with text addicts as it allowed long messages three times the size of a standard SMS text message, at 459 characters. It also featured threaded SMS writing, SMS Chat.

Nokia 1100

One of the world's best-selling phone handset and the best-selling consumer electronics device in the world at the time, Nokia 1100 was targeted towards developing countries and users who needed basic features like making calls and SMS text messages, alarm clock, reminders, etc.

Nokia's one billionth phone sold was a Nokia 1100 purchased in Nigeria in 2005.

Nokia 3250

The 3250 running on Symbian OS v9.1 (S60 3rd Edition) was announced on September 26, 2005. It featured a unique 'twist' design that transformed the traditional phone keypad into a camera and dedicated music control keys. It was marketed as a music phone with a storage capacity of 2GB and featured a two-megapixel camera.

Nokia 9210 Communicator

The 9210 Communicator was a third-generation Communicator series smartphone produced by the Finnish cell phone maker and was introduced in 2000. It was one of the few mobile phones able to send and receive fax and was also the first Nokia phone with a card slot for expandable memory.

Nokia 3650

Nokia 3650 was the first phone with an integrated VGA camera which had the potential to shoot both stills and video, was equipped with a color screen and had a unique circular keypad. It featured 3.4MB of built-in storage.

Nokia N-Gage

N-Gage was a serious attempt from Nokia to lure gamers away from the Game Boy Advance by including mobile phone functionality. The original N-Gage was described as resembling a taco, which led to its mocking nickname "Taco phone".

Nokia N93

The N93 was the most advanced camera phone from Nokia at the time of its release. The USP of this phone was its camcorder, packed in its unique swivel design like its predecessor Nokia N90.

The N93 improved upon camera capabilities over the N90. The phone had a 3.2-megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss optics and 3x optical zoom (the first Nokia phone to have it) as well as a 30 fps 640×480 (VGA) MPEG-4 video recording capability.

Nokia N95

The N95 was the world's most powerful smartphone at the time of launch.

It had a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver with maps and optional turn-by-turn navigation, a 5-megapixel digital camera with Carl Zeiss optics, flash, video recording and video conferencing; wireless connectivity via HSDPA, IrDA, 802.11x and, Bluetooth. The N95 was one of the first smartphones to support 3.5G.

The N95 and its upgraded variant N95 8GB were one of the greatest products to hit the market.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Nokia 5800 was the first touchscreen-equipped S60 device by Nokia. Part of the XpressMusic line, Nokia 5800 was launched together with the Nokia Music Store.

The 5800 XpressMusic was a commercial success with 8 million units sold a year after release and it was praised for its supplied stylus and low price.

A prototype of this handset was seen in the 2008 Batman movie, The Dark Knight.

Nokia 808 PureView

Nokia 808 PureView was first unveiled in 2012 at the Mobile World Congress. It was the first smartphone to feature Nokia's PureView Pro technology and was one of the most advanced camera phones at the time of its release.

Powered by a 41 megapixel 1/1.2 in (10.67 × 8 mm) sensor and a high-resolution f/2.4 Zeiss all-aspherical 1-group lens, the 808's sensor was the largest sensor ever to be used in a camera phone at the time of its launch. The 808 also won the award for "Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet" at Mobile World Congress 2012. It was also the last Symbian smartphone released by Nokia.

Google to soon provide internet in rural areas through balloons

Google has announced that it was “years closer” to deliver internet to remote parts of the world using high-flying balloons.

Researchers at Google’s Project Loon — part of the company’s X research lab — said it was now able to use machine learning to predict weather systems, meaning the firm has a greater control over where its balloons go, making it possible to focus on a specific region, rather than circumnavigating the globe, BBC reported on Friday.

“We can now run an experiment and try to give service in a particular place in the world with ten, twenty or thirty balloons,” Astro Teller, head of Alphabet’s X unit (formerly Google X), was quoted as saying.

“Real users” will be able to use the system in the “coming months”, he added — but he did not specify where the initial roll out would take place.

Under the project, the firm will suspend a network of huge, tennis-court sized balloons that will beam down connectivity.

The balloons float in the stratosphere around 11 miles high. By raising or lowering altitude, the balloons can be caught in different weather streams, changing direction, the report said.

“By using machine-learning algorithms, Google might have cracked a way to predict weather with enough accuracy to make it possible to hover balloons over a relatively small area for a long period of time,” the report noted.

Teller said that Project Loon was one of the more “mature” moonshot ideas at the company and Google was in “no rush” to make Project Loon a stand-alone business.

Last year, Teller said the connection had advanced to deliver about 15mbps internet access.

NASA Spacecraft Detects Organic Compounds on Dwarf Planet Ceres, Raising Prospect of Life

A NASA spacecraft has detected carbon-based materials, similar to what may have been the building blocks for life on Earth, on the Texas-sized dwarf planet Ceres that orbits between Mars and Jupiter in the main asteroid belt, scientists said on Thursday.

The finding puts Ceres, a rock-and-ice world about 590 miles (950 km) in diameter, on a growing list of places in the solar system of interest to scientists looking for life beyond Earth. The list includes Mars and several ocean-bearing moons of Jupiter and Saturn.

The discovery, published in the journal Science, was made by a team of researchers using NASA's Dawn spacecraft, which has been orbiting Ceres for nearly two years.

"I think these organic molecules are a long way from microbial life," Dawn lead scientist Christopher Russell of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) wrote in an email to Reuters. "However, this discovery tells us that we need to explore Ceres further." Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt and is located about three times farther from the sun than Earth. The composition of Ceres is thought to reflect the material present in parts of the solar system when it was forming some 4-1/2 billion years ago.

"The discovery indicates that the starting material in the solar system contained the essential elements, or the building blocks, for life," Russell said.

"Ceres may have been able to take this process only so far. Perhaps to move further along the path took a larger body with more complex structure and dynamics," like Earth, Russell added.

The organic material was found near a 31-mile-wide (50-km-wide) crater in Ceres' northern hemisphere. Although the exact molecular compounds in the organics could not be identified, they matched tar-like minerals, such as kerite or asphaltite, the scientists wrote.

"Because Ceres is a dwarf planet that may still preserve internal heat from its formation period and may even contain a subsurface ocean, this opens the possibility that primitive life could have developed on Ceres itself," planetary scientist Michael Kuppers of the European Space Astronomy Centre in Madrid wrote in an related essay in the journal Science.

Based on the location and type of organics found on Ceres, scientists ruled out the possibility they were deposited by a crashing asteroid or comet.

Lead researcher Maria Cristina De Sanctis of Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics and colleagues suspect the material formed inside Ceres through hydrothermal activity, though how the organics reached the surface remains a mystery.

Facebook Takes First Step Toward Making Money From WhatsApp Deal

It’s hard to believe three years have passed since Facebook dropped $22 billion on WhatsApp, and that in all that time the popular messaging app has not significantly changed its business model to make money.

But now comes a substantial step towards chasing profits: WhatsApp has hired Matthew Idema, a senior executive in marketing and advertising from Facebook, to be its first chief operating officer, a spokesperson for WhatsApp told FORBES.

The hiring was first reported by Recode, which said that while Idema’s role was still being “ironed out” his new job would see him focus on helping WhatsApp monetize itself. WhatsApp announced his appointment internally on Tuesday afternoon. Like WhatsApp’s co-founders Idema spent a large chunk of his earlier career in Silicon Valley at Yahoo.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg brokered his blockbuster takeover deal with WhatsApp in February 2014 on the premise that the company would remain independent, and that he wouldn’t put pressure on its founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton to monetize. This, despite the fact that Zuckerberg bought Instagram for far less ($1 billion) in 2012, and Instagram’s revenue has since shot up to $630 million in 2015, according to eMarketer.

For years WhatsApp had charged its users, who now number 1.2 billion, a small annual subscription to use the app, and that brought in a few million dollars each year in revenue. It also pledged to never show them ads.

Then in January 2016, Koum announced in a blog post that the subscription fees were ending, and that WhatsApp was exploring ways of charging businesses to communicate with its users in an objective, useful and basically non-ad-like way. “That could mean communicating with your bank about whether a recent transaction was fraudulent, or with an airline about a delayed flight,” he said.

Even back then this goal and the scenarios that contextualised it sounded a little unrealistic — businesses want to pay to send you persuasive messages, more than they do informative ones — and that might explain why, a year later, we have yet to see examples in the wild of businesses chatting to WhatsApp users.

In joining WhatsApp as COO, Idema may take some of what Facebook has learned from trying to do similar things on Messenger. In early 2016 Facebook invited businesses to target its users through the Facebook News Feed, and then chat to them on Messenger with so-called chat bots.

This was part of a loudly-touted belief in the tech industry at the time that chat bots were ushering in an age of “conversational commerce” that would transform the way advertisers engaged with people. Months later, Messenger’s vice president David Marcus admitted to a TechCrunch Disrupt audience that bots “got really overhyped, really, really quickly.”

While Facebook’s ad revenue still soared by almost 60% to $26 billion for 2016, it’s unclear how much of that came from chat bots. It was probably not much. “Consumers have been slow to warm up to the idea of interacting with chat bots and paid advertising in messaging applications,” says Debra Aho Williamson, a principal analyst at market research firm eMarketer.

Facebook’s most substantial attempts to make money from WhatsApp till now came in August 2016, when WhatsApp announced that it would start funnelling data about its users to Facebook to help with ad targeting on Facebook.

This prompted a backlash from many WhatsApp users who saw the app as a privacy haven thanks to its default encryption standards. It also sparked an investigation by the European Competition Commission into whether Facebook misled regulators about its intentions to take data on WhatsApp users, an issue Idema will have to keep an eye on when navigating WhatsApp’s next steps here.

Idema’s views on advertising seem, at least, to fit in fairly well with WhatsApp’s. In a list of predictions he wrote for Campaign on digital marketing in 2015, he said that businesses would increasingly use messaging to interact with customers, adding that they’d also take a more personalized approach to targeting.

Personalized ads — or targeted messages, depending on how you want to describe this rather gray area — would be another tricky issue for WhatsApp to navigate, given that it was founded on strict privacy principles. But WhatsApp also needs to make good on its obligations to Facebook, and that could spell some challenging reassessments with Idema over the coming year.

Get PAN CARD, pay taxes through your smartphone shortly

NEW DELHI, INDIA: You may soon be able to get a permanent account number in minutes and also pay income tax through your smartphone.

As part of its drive to make life easy for taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes is working on issuing PAN on a real-time basis using Aadhaar's e-KYC facility, which allows an individual to verify his or her details such as address using biometric identification features like thumb impressions.

"If a SIM can be issued through e- KYC, then the same can be done for PAN," said an officer adding that the process may be crunched to five-six minutes from two-three weeks at present. While the number will be issued, the card will be delivered later.

The CBDT and the ministry of corporate affairs have already tied up to issue PAN to new companies incorporating through a combined form in four hours. The idea, again, is to move to real-time issuing of PAN, which will also become the business identification number for companies.

Separately, the tax department is developing an app that will help you pay taxes online and perform a host of other services such as apply for PAN or track your returns. While the department is offering several services online through its portal, the app is expected to make life simpler for seniors as well as young taxpayers.

The two projects are being done in-house with the directorate of systems coordinating with CBDT, said sources.

The Moto G5 Plus will be the higher-end model of the two, as you'd expect. It will come with a 5.2-inch 1080p touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 3, a 12 MP main camera with dual autofocus pixels, a 5 MP selfie snapper, the Snapdragon 625 chipset at the helm, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, NFC, a water repellent coating, a fingerprint sensor, and a 3,000 mAh battery with support for "TurboPower" charging. Its dimensions are 150.2 x 74 x 7.9mm, and it weighs 155g. It runs Android 7.0 Nougat.

Moto G5 Plus

The Moto G5, on the other hand, has to make do with a 5-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front-facing shooter, the Snapdragon 430 chipset, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, no NFC, and a 2,800 mAh battery with 10W rapid charging. It's also got the fingerprint scanner and water repellent coating, and runs Android 7.0 Nougat like its sibling. Its dimensions are 144.3 x 73 x 9.5mm, and it weighs 145g.

Moto G5

As you can see from the images, the G5 Plus has a camera hump, while the G5 doesn't. Both devices will be offered in Lunar Grey and Fine Gold. They both have a "precision-crafted" aluminum design and the G5 sports a Lenovo logo on the side - not something we've seen before in the mobile world.

Since it appears that retailers are pretty much ready to sell the G5 and G5 Plus, we assume that they will become available very soon after the official announcement. Pricing is still a mystery, but with those specs do expect mid-range levels of course.

It states that some cities are so polluted that 30 minutes of exercise does more harm than good.

The study was published in the journal Preventive Medicine and it used cycling as the sample activity to simulate exercise. The study assumed an average cycling speed of 12-14 kilometres an hour to check its impact on the body. The results are shocking.

In north Indian cities such as Allahabad and Gwalior, cycling for more than 30 minutes is bad for health, the study said. In New Delhi, one hour is when the 'breakeven point' is reached. If PM2.5 levels are above a certain level, then any kind of outdoor activity could lead to serious health problems even without exercise. It's not hard to see why the effect will be severe on those who run or cycle outdoors in that kind of weather.

A report in The Guardian maps cities across the world and how many minutes of exercise is good for health in each. The findings show that India has some of the world’s most polluted cities and in many north Indian towns, it’s best not to exercise for more than an hour. Notably, the study did not measure this in other parts of India so highly polluted cities such as Mumbai don’t show up there

The study did use cycling as a way to measure impact of pollution on exercise but it says that the same numbers apply to similar activities such as slow jogging. If you are training for a half marathon, you might want to consider alternatives such as training indoors. The report claims that breathing polluted air has been linked with heart disease, stroke, and even some cancers.

Blass in the Venture Beat report cites a person briefed on HMD Global's plans and claims that the four Nokia phones will be launched at Nokia's MWC 2017 event. He adds that the new Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 smartphone will be Android 7.0 Nougat-based smartphones featuring toned down innards. Blass claims that Nokia 5 will feature a 5.2-inch HD display while packing just 2GB of RAM. The smartphone will feature a 12-megapixel rear camera. The report suggests a price tag of EUR 199 (roughly Rs. 14,000) for the Nokia 5 at launch citing the person briefed about the plans. The Nokia 3, on the other hand, is expected to be unveiled at EUR 149 (roughly Rs. 10,500). Blass also mentions Nokia 6 in the report which may mean that the China-exclusive smartphone may finally see a global unveiling.

The Nokia 6 smartphone has so far been available in China twice and has seen tremendous response there. In its first flash sale, the Nokia 6 smartphone reportedly went out of stock in a minute. In the meanwhile, the Nokia 6 second flash sale saw 1.4 million registrations. The company hasn't confirmed plans but the Nokia 6 is widely rumoured to launch outside China.

Why Apple Is the Only Manufacturer That Actually Has a 'Flagship' Phone 

The iPhone 5s was released in September 2013. It was followed by the iPhone 6 in 2014, the iPhone 6s in 2015, and then the iPhone 7 last year. It's been three and a half years, but the iPhone 5s is still on sale, and runs the latest software from the company. Its hardware might seem a little a underpowered today, but it's otherwise up to date. What about the Android flagships from the same era - the offerings of the likes of Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG and Motorola? In the same year, we got the Galaxy S4, the HTC One, Xperia Z1, LG G2 and the first Moto X.

Good luck finding any of those to buy today - and also, good luck in case you do get one of them. That's because those phones stopped receiving updates to Android after Android 5.0 Lollipop - incidentally, still the most popular version of Android at this point.

Apple controls both the hardware and software in its phones, and that's what helps it to get the latest updates to older phones as well; on the other hand, the Android ecosystem is fragmented across multiple stakeholders, and this can be a challenge.

Some of the Android flagships we mentioned are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, and there's a three-way blame-game between Qualcomm, the manufacturers, and Google, about why phones aren’t getting the Nougat update.

Beyond that though, Android manufacturers don't really have much incentive to support their flagships beyond a short window - Apple releases a couple of phones each year (not counting a few out of step models, such as the iPhone 5c or the more recent iPhone SE) and this year's flagship becomes next year's budget model.

With Android on the other hand, you'll see variants and new models released sometimes just a month or so after the launch of a "flagship" phone. The brands release a whole "family" of products, from low-cost devices up to top end flagships, and supporting last year's phones would start eating into the territory that other devices in the lineup are supposed to occupy.

Samsung, for example, at this moment has 27 active smartphones listed on its official website with sub-series such as the Galaxy On, Galaxy J, Galaxy A, Galaxy C, Galaxy S, and the Galaxy Note series. The remaining brands also aren't far behind. And as a result, the flagships themselves are forgotten rather quickly.

When you have 30 products in your lineup, you're looking at a crazy amount of after-sales complexity, with a huge range of hardware parts and a lot of different logistical challenges to manage. Having so many different parts also slows the update process as there are so many different devices that manufacturers have to support.

Apple’s strategy of keeping its older devices active also helps with better brand recall. It’s hard to remember every product that one Android manufacturer makes (barring exceptions such as OnePlus), but it’s not hard to recall every iPhone out there. That’s why even a 2013 product like the iPhone 5s still is desirable to some people, even though similarly priced Android phones offer far better value for money.

With each new generation, the older iPhones simply move back a step in the pecking order - and the pricing order - and this means that they get support for a lot longer. Since the company's focus is on just a few products each year, its focus is on making something that's good, and guaranteeing support for years.

On the other hand, in the Android world, there's a lot more conflict. After the launch of the high-end Galaxy S6 in 2015, the Galaxy A8 followed a few months later with a similar design, watered-down specs and a cheaper price tag of around Rs. 30,000. At this point, last year’s Galaxy S5 was also at around the same price - and obviously Samsung was interested in promoting its new phone.

A wide family of phones means that there's something for everyone. The cheapest Apple products (which are still usable) can never hit the under Rs. 10,000 spot that is within reach of a big chunk of smartphone buyers today. But speaking as a customer, if more smartphone manufacturers would take a cue from Apple and trim their lines, so that buying an Android flagship meant something beyond just about a year, it would be great. And considering that Apple eats the lion's share of profits from smartphones, surely there's a lesson in it for the manufacturers as well?

ISRO PSLV-C37 Rocket With Record 104 Satellites Aboard Launched at Sriharikota

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Tuesday successfully launched the PSLV-C37 rocket with 104 satellites on board, creating a new record for the most satellites on a single rocket. This is the latest triumph for the famously frugal space agency, which earned plaudits from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee for the feat

The Indian Space Research Organisation on Wednesday scripted history by successfully launching a record 104 satellites, including India’s earth observation satellite, on a single rocket from the spaceport here.

This is the highest number of satellites ever launched in a single mission.

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C37 blasted off at 9:28 am from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre and first injected Cartosat-2 series satellite into orbit followed by the other 103 nano satellites, including 96 from the U.S, in a gap of about 30 minutes.

As the scientists at the Mission Control centre broke into cheers, ISRO Chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar announced: “All 104 satellites successfully placed in orbit. My hearty congratulations to the entire ISRO team for the wonderful job they have done.”

Earlier, the Russian Space Agency had launched 37 satellites in one go.

ISRO had earlier launched 23 satellites in a single mission in June 2015.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Team ISRO for the successful launch.

In today’s complex mission after the end of 28-hour countdown, the PSLV-C37 injected the 714 kg Cartosat-2 series satellite followed by ISRO’s nano satellites INS-1A and INS-1B in an 505 km polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO).

This was followed by launch of the other 101 nano satellites of overseas customers in blocks in a series of separations.

INS-1A and INS-1B will carry a total of four different payloads from Space Applications Centre (SAC) and Laboratory for Electro Optics Systems (LEOS) of ISRO for conducting various experiments, ISRO said

Cartosat-2 series satellite, with a mission life of five years, will send images that would cater to coastal land use and regulation, road network monitoring, distribution of water, creation of land use maps among others

Meanwhile, ISRO chief A.S. Kiran Kumar said at the mission control centre at Sriharikota that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the space agency team for the successful launch.

“Congratulations to @isro for the successful launch of PSLV-C37 and CARTOSAT satellite together with 103 nano satellites!,” Mr. Modi said in a tweet.

“This remarkable feat by @isro is yet another proud moment for our space scientific community and the nation. India salutes our scientists,” he said.

The Redmi Note 5 is expected to ship with 4GB of RAM on the inside, and also 32GB or 64GB of expandable internal storage. On the back of the device, you can expect to see a 16-megapixel camera, while an 8-megapixel snapper will probably be placed on the device’s front side. The 4,000mAh battery will probably also be a part of the package, and Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging will be at your disposal as well. The leak says that the MIUI 9 OS will come pre-installed on the Redmi Note 5, but truth be told, we doubt that MIUI 9 will be ready for launch before the end of this month, so this part seems a bit fishy. In addition to all that, it seems like the phone will ship win Black, Silver and Gold variants, at least according to the leaked info.

Now, as you can see, a lot of Redmi Note 5 info leaked, including even the phone’s pricing. If the provided information is accurate, the Redmi Note 5 will cost €200 ($212) in Europe, $200 in the US and ₹12,999 ($191) in India. Do take this info with a grain of salt, as we cannot confirm that it is legit, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. As already mentioned, Xiaomi is expected to launch the Redmi Note 5 before the end of January, so we’ll probably get more info soon.
